Briarwood Bugle 2023
Week 7
Check out our latest Briarwood Bugle! You can read it below or see it in glorious color and with photos here
From Mike and Matt
It was yet another amazing week! (Can you believe it? Actually, we can.)
Color War ended spectacularly, as always. A smiling good time was had by all. Congratulations to the Blue Pop Icons!
We wanted to highlight something about our Color War events because it is at the core of our philosophy. Our activities are designed so that every camper is involved and gets to shine. Through a wide variety of events, different campers kick, swim, dance, run, throw, sing, climb, run, carry, and—most importantly—cheer for each other and have fun all over camp. It’s wonderful, positive, affirming stuff. And again this summer, our amazing campers and staff showed us again what camp is really all about. We’ve got so many awesome things planned for next week (see below as well as page 4 for just a taste). Can’t wait!
The Beautiful Butterflies By: Alex Goldberg and Sophie Kravatz
The Beautiful Butterflies have been flying all around camp! We are enjoying all the fun activities this summer. Our favorites include swim, drama, and soccer. The Butterflies flip for gymnastics, and enjoy balancing on the beam! Additionally, we love catching fish at nature! We have had the best summer! We are so glad to have gotten to know these amazing girls!

SOME FRIENDLY BRIARWOOD REMINDERS:
• If you want to reach your camper’s counselor during the camp day, call the offiweek 7 2023ce at 215-598-7143 and we will gladly relay your message. Please do not TEXT or CALL your child’s counselor directly during the camp day. Our counselors are busy watching children and we have asked them not to check their phones during the day.
• Early and Late Care is available from 7:30 am—6:00 pm sharp. Please call the office if you will need this service.
• While it never rains at Briarwood, in the event of a passing shower, please send your camper with the appropriate rain gear should the forecast call for rain.
• Apply sunscreen daily prior to coming to camp.
• Please label all clothing and personal items. That said — and because we know
kids — our Lost and Found is located by the Sports Center on Upper Field.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO CAMP IF HE/SHE is NOT FEELING WELL
MEET OUR WONDERFULLY AMAZING STAFF!
We return with profiles of more senior staff members at Briarwood Day Camp
NATE FRANKEL has made Briarwood his second home for the past 14 summers. He started off as a second grader in the Bears and now is the senior counselor of the Jaguars. Nate’s absolute favorite part about working at Briarwood is that ALL of his friends work here too. During the off season, he attends West Chester University and he likes to golf. Nate’s favorite TV show is Breaking Bad and if he could be an animal he’d be a bald eagle. Most people don’t know that Nate can play piano. If he could go anywhere in the world it wouldn’t matter where it was as long as he was with family and friends.
STEPHANIE CLARK is an ORIGINAL Briarwood camper from 1986 and has been a part of the Briarwood family for 21 years. She has two children that attend camp and they love it! Steph’s favorite thing about Briarwood is seeing all of the smiling faces of the carefree children. During the offseason, Stephanie is a teacher for the School District of Philadelphia. Her favorite TV show is Friends and if she were an animal she would be a puppy. Most people don’t know that Steph would rather stay at home with her family than go out into a crowd. If she could go anywhere in the world, she would venture to Hawaii.
SOFIA ROBERTS has been making Briarwood her summer home since 2009. She began as a busy bee in the Fawns and this summer she is the senior counselor of the Robins. During the off season, Sofia attends West Chester University. Sofia’s favorite part about Briarwood is all of the amazing friends she’s made here at camp. Sofia’s favorite TV show is White Collar and if she were an animal she’d be a dog. If Sofia could go anywhere in the world, she would choose to visit Greece.
JULIE SCHIEKEN is an invaluable member of the Briarwood team and is known as the senior counselor of our tiniest campers, the Crickets. Four of her own children can also be found at Briarwood during the summer and they’ve been spending their past 7 summers here at Briarwood. Julie’s favorite thing about Briarwood is working with the incredible Busy Bee staff and seeing her kids having fun and smiling all day long. During the offseason, she is an at home care physical therapist. If Julie could go anywhere in the world it would be right at home surrounded by her kids, husband, dog and cat during movie night… with a handful of Milk Duds. Something most people don’t know is that she was on a reality TV show for one episode when she was in college.

Important Dates
The Falcons, Soaring High By: Jack Sorkin
The Falcons are having a fantastic summer! This group loves many different camp activities such as leagues, the rock wall, dodgeball, and gaga. In leagues, they play basketball, soccer, softball, and football, and every Falcon is making a strong impact on their team. Climbing the rock wall has shown to be one of this group’s favorite activities. Many of them went down the zipline and even completed the leap of faith! This shows just how courageous this group of kids is. Dodgeball is super fun, and they laugh a lot while being competitive at the same time. Gaga is another Falcon favorite that all members of the bunk can participate in. They jump, dodge, duck, and dive to be the last man standing. Junior counselor, Matt Green, and myself are very proud of what this group has shown us, and we are looking forward to the last week of this already amazing summer. Overall, the Falcons are having a great time at camp, making friends, and creating awesome memories. They feel happy and excited every day, and they love their summer at Briarwood Day Camp!
