Three Reasons Why Learning To Swim Is So Important For Preschoolers

Susan Garber

Associate Director / Busy Bee Supervisor

All preschoolers should learn how to swim! Not sure about that? Think preschool is too young? No! Preschool is the perfect age for kids to learn how to swim. We’ve been teaching preschoolers how to swim at Briarwood Day Camp since 1986. Let’s discuss.

1. Learning To Swim Keeps Kids Safe

Being able to swim and being water safe are life skills that everyone should have. Whether it’s neighborhood pool parties, class picnics, beach trips, family vacations or something else, kids will have the opportunity to swim in a pool, lake or ocean. As their friends swim – or leave the shallow water – or go down a pool slide – or jump into the ocean – we want our kids to be able to join them safely. Teaching preschoolers to swim gives them a great head start safety-wise and socially. And, being so young, they learn quickly!

2. Swimming Boosts a Preschooler’s Self-Confidence and Creativity

Learning to swim is not always easy. Swimming takes practice. Our swim instructors help preschoolers learn to swim (and to enjoy themselves) by engaging them in fun water activities like splashing, floating or moving like different animals in the water, such as paddling like a bear, gliding like a fish or hopping like a frog. Kids play creatively, using their imaginations and learning to work through challenges as they learn to swim . . . and as they learn to swim, they learn to feel even more confident in the water, which leads to more creative exploration as they become even more comfortable trying new things.

3. Swimming Keeps Kids Active

Adults know that few kinds of exercise are better than swimming. Swimming involves all muscles in a low impact way. What better way to keep a preschooler active? Or to help a preschooler with coordination? And they’ll keep swimming because IT’S FUN!!!back floating
