A Good Summer Camp Helps Kids Develop Confidence and Resiliency

Mike Green

Owner / Director

Summer camp is the best. Sunshine, friends, playing, laughing, splashing in the pool – what could be better? At Briarwood Day Camp – and other camps like us – we take great pride in not only giving kids fun, memorable, carefree summers but also providing building blocks like confidence, resiliency and perseverance that will help our campers for the rest of their lives.

Life can be scary for children sometimes. They face lots of new experiences and some of these might be strange or uncomfortable. As parents (and as camp administrators), we want our children to be able to face new challenges and to be prepared to meet them with confidence.

Let’s Try New Things!

At Briarwood, we expose children to new things in a positive, supportive way. Whether it’s swimming, rock wall, basketball, ceramics, gymnastics, drama or any of the other 50+ activities at camp, our staff will both model positive behavior for our concerned or apprehensive campers and then support them as they try to complete a task.

Our campers learn not to quit after the first try. We support them and show them the benefits of perseverance. And their smiles tell the story – day after day and year after year.

Likewise – and just like athletic or artistic pursuits – we know that making friends does not come easily to all children. Our staff is trained in inclusion – they know how to help kids integrate and then learn for themselves (with support as needed) how to be inclusive and a good friend. This, too, is a skill that may take practice but that children learn at camp and will take with them.

Kids who are concerned about their proficiency in athletics or the arts or socially or in mastering any new task learn at camp that it is OK to struggle and that they can develop these skills. They learn confidence and resiliency. Camp teaches them not to ignore their fears or concerns but rather to believe in themselves and know that they have the power to overcome obstacles.

At Briarwood Day Camp, we’re always looking for ways to help kids to have happy, active, exciting summers that they’ll remember forever and will help them grow. Interested in learning more? Call us at the camp at (215) 598 -7143 or email us at office@briarwooddaycamp.com. We’ll tell you more!
