Briarwood Bugle 2022
Week 5

From Mike and Matt
It has been another amazing (and steamy) week at spectacularly awesome Briarwood Day Camp! Our Second Annual Briarwood Mini Golf Semi Invitational Tournament—where everyone was actually invited—was a hit. The Super CITs had an awesome day at the beach and loved their trip to Hershey Park and our “regular” camp stuff continued to amaze and astound! Also, popsicles on super-humid Thursday morning (!) were a welcome surprise. We ended the week with Goofy Day today and, well, it certainly earned its name!

It continues to be fantastic to see so many smiling, laughing kids all around camp.
Next week is the Busy Bee Show—always a crowd pleaser featuring Briarwood’s cutest! Carnival is next week, too. The fun continues! Have a great weekend!

Beware of the Sharks! By Jim Waltz
WOW! I can’t believe the first half of camp is over. The Sharks have been in full force participating in so many activities around camp, from swimming and tennis to art and drama. Each activity has showcased each of the boys’ athletic and artistic abilities. We kicked off this summer with some lower camp contests, where some of our Sharks brought home some ribbons. The Sharks have showed some HIGH-FLYING action on the zipline and have proven themselves as fierce competitors in the gaga pit. Look out World Cup, the Sharks are coming with their amazing soccer skills! Let’s not forget about our Super-Duper Sharks vs Otters dodgeball games! To wrap up the first half of camp, the Sharks put on an AMAZING Bunk Show with their great dance moves! We have so many more fun, exciting events coming up and I know these Sharks are ready for more!!!

Cooking Club! By Jessie Gottlieb and Aliza Stepansky

Have you ever eaten dirt? What about sand? If you are scratching your head and saying, “WHAT??” Do not be alarmed! At Briarwood, dirt and sand are just two of the delicious treats we make every week at cooking club. Over the last few weeks, campers at cooking club have had a blast making other yummy treats like nachos and pizza bagels. We have loved watching our aspiring chefs do everything from sprinkling on the perfect amount of cheese on their pizza bagels, to making beautiful patterns for a fruit loop necklace. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer has in store!

Congratulations to the Flamingos and the Foxes! They sang the Briarwood song and all won Matt Frankel’s t-shirt!

SOME FRIENDLY BRIARWOOD REMINDERS:
• If you want to reach your camper’s counselor during the camp day, call the office at 215-598-7143 and we will gladly relay your message. Please do not TEXT or CALL your child’s counselor directly during the camp day. Our counselors are busy watching children and we have asked them not to check their phones during the day.
• Early and Late Care is available from 7:30 am—6:00 pm sharp. Please call the office if you will need this service.
• While it never rains at Briarwood, in the event of a passing shower, please send your camper with the appropriate rain gear should the forecast call for rain.
• Apply sunscreen daily prior to coming to camp.
• Please label all clothing and personal items. That said — and because we know
kids — our Lost and Found is located by the Sports Center on Upper Field.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO CAMP IF HE/SHE is NOT FEELING WELL

MEET OUR WONDERFULLY AMAZING STAFF! PART V
We return with profiles of more senior staff members at Briarwood Day Camp

JACKSON GOTTLIEB is celebrating his 9th summer at Briarwood Day Camp. This summer, Jackson is first year senior counselor of the Tigers. During the off season, Jackson is a student at the University of Pittsburgh. Jackson’s favorite activity at Briarwood is the jumper. If Jackson were an animal, he would be a cat. If Jackson could travel anywhere in the world, he would go to Rome, Italy. People would be surprised to learn that Jackson has been on the radio.
ALEXANDRA (ALEX) GOLDBERG has made Briarwood her summer home for 15 seasons. This summer Alex is a senior counselor who can be found lending a hand all over camp. Alex, a recent Temple University graduate, is a stage manager during the off season. While at Temple, Alex worked on over 10 shows including 3 operas. Alex’s favorite thing about Briarwood is all of the friends she has made and Nature with Jenn. Alex’s favorite movie is The Sound of Music.

Briarwood Presents: The Lion King Gymnastics Show! By Rebecca Nahom

Briarwood’s Gymnastics Show is coming up next week! The kids who are in the show have been in gymnastics club all summer and they can’t wait to show off their new skills. Our theme is The Lion King and all the fantastic animals will wow you with their jumps, leaps, cartwheels, back bends and so much more. We bet you never saw a lion swing on the bars before! The Upper Camp girls have been practicing different routines, especially astounding us with their floor routine that showcases their awesome flexibility and feats of strength. The Lower Camp girls have impressed us with how quickly they are learning to balance on the beam, flip around the bars and jump over the vault. Everyone is having so much fun preparing for the big day. There are tons of dance moves, Lion King songs and of course – super cool gymnastics tricks. Hakuna Matata – no worries, our gymnasts are incredible!

Senior Camp is SO Much Fun! By Sorelle Sax
Senior Camp had a fun-filled, fantastic, fabulous time on our trips out of camp this week! The Super CITs enjoyed a sweet day at Hershey Park and Chocolate World. They had a thrilling time on Candymonium, Jolly Rancher and Sky Rush. Our awesome time at Hershey Park was followed by a sleepover at camp. What heat? Next we went to Belmar beach for a relaxing day in the sun and sand. We boogie boarded the day away! Later in the week, the first year CITs showed us their inner Tiger Woods as they got many holes in one on their trip to Pine Creek Mini Golf. Summer is sizzling by, and we are so very excited about our upcoming trips to Point Pleasant Beach and Dorney Park!
