Summer Camp: Where Preschoolers Grow, Play and Shine! – PART I

Susan Garber

Associate Director / Busy Bee Supervisor

Preschoolers are energetic sponges! Summer camp is the perfect place for kids 3-5 to learn, grow, explore and more.

At Briarwood Day Camp, our preschoolers laugh and have fun AND we work towards important developmental milestones. Briarwood campers get to learn as they have fun and they get to have fun while they learn.

How do we do it? We’ll begin to try to explain in this four part series.
Part I – Group Games & Team Fun and Creative Arts & Crafts
Part II – Outdoor Adventure & Play and Cognitive Development & Critical Thinking
Part III – Music & Movement and Physical Development & Coordination
Part IV – Creativity & Imagination and Reflection, Rest & Relaxation Time

Group Games & Team Fun

Camp is all about teamwork and enjoying games together. Group activities are not just fun—they help kids develop important social skills, such as working with others, following rules, and being part of a team. Can you say Color War?!

• Team Games: Campers get the opportunity to play cooperative games like parachute play, relay races, or group games like “Duck, Duck, Drench” or “Simon Says.” These activities – as well as our “traditional” sports – allow children to learn to work together, follow instructions and celebrate group achievements.

• Imaginative Play & Role-Playing: Camp encourages pretend play, whether it’s creating stories with friends or acting out favorite characters. This type of imaginative play lets children become explorers, animals, or superheroes (or anything else!), all of which is fun, empowering and great for growth.

Creative Arts & Crafts

Camp is a great place for young children to unleash their inner artists! Arts & Crafts, a favorite activity for preschoolers, are both fun and also great for our campers’ development.

• Messy, Creative Play: Kids love the freedom of getting messy with paint, glue, markers, and clay. Whether it’s finger painting, clay sculpting or making nature crafts, these activities encourage children to experiment with different materials while having fun!

• Imaginative Art Projects: Crafts often tie into stories, nature, or seasonal themes, allowing children to create things that reflect their imaginations. Whether it’s making animal masks, creating colorful collages, painting a mural or any other of the gajillion creative things our campers do, art projects are a delightful way to express themselves, develop and grow.

At Briarwood, our Busy Bee Program for 3-5 year olds is a blend of adventure, creativity, growth, teamwork and carefree fun. Our campers experience a sense of happiness, belonging and excitement that they’ll carry with them long after the camp session ends. From sports to swimming to arts and crafts, from nature to drama to outdoor adventures, camp is the ultimate place for little ones to make friends, play, grow and have a blast!
